Backround

The water management in the cross border area is an issue of great important as there plenty of important ecosystems to protect. In Almopia (Greece), there is a wide area that is being included in Natura 2000 network and includes the fields of numerous villages and important species of flora while Negotino (Republic of North Macedonia) has plenty of fields of vines that constitute a cohesive ecosystem contributing to local economy. The systems of water supply in both Municipalities need to be improved because they cause water loss that burden the wider environment, along with the absence of sewage and waterwaste treatment systems. Thus, both areas have common challenges to face.

The approach of the project is based on interventions in the three main axes of human activities on water; the activities of irrigation, sewage and drinking water supply. These three human practices are included in the responsibilities of the local government authorities and can become the axes for their contribution in the reduction of the human environmental footprint in this sector. The partnership includes four local self government bodies; the Municipality of Almopia, the Municipality of Negotino, the Municipal Enterprise for Water and Sewage of Almopia and the Public Utility Komunalec in Negotino.

This holistic character of the project is combined the sharing of good practices between the four partners and the creation of a network for the water management that will include more neighboring institutions, since water problems are wide and common in the whole cross border area.

This is also the reason of making cross border cooperation necessary; water knows no borders and its management should be an overall one.
